"The water is nice": Jane Levy and Jessica Rothe's River trailer

A swim after scattering a father's ashes draws a stranger off the riverbank, and viewers already have advice for the people on the boat.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,417,883 views a day, 253 times a normal first day on this channel (5,597).

Three estranged siblings take their father's ashes out onto a remote river, raise a toast "To dad," and one of them, Carla, dives in. "The water is nice!" she calls back. Then she notices a bloodied man standing silently among the trees on the shore. He wades in and swims straight for her.

That is the whole setup of the trailer for River, and Universal Pictures has let it do the selling. In 13 hours it passed a million views, a start far beyond what the studio's short uploads usually manage in a full day. The comment section moved even faster. Uploads like this typically gather a handful of comments on their first day. This one drew more than a thousand.

Much of that conversation is a single complaint. As the siblings scream at Carla to swim back, many viewers want to know why nobody simply starts the boat and goes to get her. The description answers it before the trailer does: the boat is dead, the sun is down and there is no cell service.

The other talking point is the cast. Jane Levy, who survived Fede Álvarez's Evil Dead and Don't Breathe, plays one of the siblings, and plenty of commenters greet her as the Mia of Evil Dead. Jessica Rothe, who lived the same murderous birthday on a loop in the Happy Death Day films, is beside her, with Max Mattern as the brother. Dane DiLiegro plays the masked figure doing the hunting.

River is the first feature from writer-director Joshua Giuliano. Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster picked it up after it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness program, and it opens in theaters January 15. It joins The Exorcist: Martyrs, whose trailer came out days earlier, on the studio's growing horror slate.
