"Normal people" will decide Russell Brand's trial, says Guardian editor Aaron Sharp
On Today in Focus, Lucy Hough and Sharp look at the daily podcasts, YouTube updates and courtroom sketches that have grown up around the case.
Why this story? The video is running at 24,463 views a day, 19 times its usual pace (1,264).
Media frenzy at Russell Brand trial
"Media frenzy at Russell Brand trial" is a short excerpt from The Latest, the 10-minute evening edition of the Guardian's Today in Focus. Its subject is the coverage as much as the courtroom. Lucy Hough opens by saying she has been struck by the "media circus" around the case, then turns at once to what lies at its center: six women alleging serious sexual crimes over a decade, from 1999 to 2009. Brand, a former comedian, faces charges of rape and sexual assault. He denies all of them.
Senior national news editor Aaron Sharp links the shape of the coverage to who is on trial. "You have got a content creator on trial, and that's given rise to all of these new forms of media coverage," he says. He points to daily newspaper podcasts and to YouTubers posting updates from outside court.
Sharp also describes how Brand is presented as a born-again Christian surrounded by critics, and how courtroom sketches have drawn him as a mystical figure. Footage shows Brand arriving at court. When a reporter asks how he is feeling, he answers: "Most blessed, thank you very much."
The clip was posted on October 15. Five days later it drew roughly 24,000 views in a single day, far beyond its earlier pace, while the channel as a whole had an ordinary day.
Sharp ends by turning away from the spectacle and back to the people the case rests on: the women who came forward, and the jury. "Normal people, not celebrities, not influencers. Normal people will decide how this trial plays out."
