Finland has quietly delivered ItO 90M air-defence systems to Ukraine to help intercept Russian missiles and jet-powered drones, according to The Sun's report. Security analyst Luke Coffey examines both the launchers' capabilities and the reasoning behind keeping weapons shipments out of the spotlight.
The system is a Finnish adaptation of the French Crotale, mounted on a self-propelled wheeled platform. Coffey describes a radar-equipped launcher carrying eight missiles, with an interception range of roughly 15 kilometres. Its role, he explains, includes engaging subsonic cruise missiles and jet drones.
That makes it a different tool from the longer-range Patriot system, rather than a replacement for it. Coffey distinguishes between high-altitude protection and the shorter-range defences needed to engage threats closer to the areas being protected.
The secrecy is part of his argument. "In terms of the secrecy around it, I think this is a sensible approach," he says, contrasting Finland's low-profile deliveries with the public announcements that accompanied some earlier American assistance. He says Finland has previously supplied Ukraine without publicly identifying the weapons involved.
The report also places Finnish President Alexander Stubb's diplomatic contact with Vladimir Putin alongside the military assistance. Coffey closes by urging allies to increase deliveries before winter, linking Ukraine's protection to the security of its neighbours: "European air defense starts with Ukrainian air defense."
