Speeders, podracers and an outlaw league: Star Wars launches Galactic Racer
In the comments, viewers are busy spotting old Phantom Menace faces and comparing the game to Burnout and the Nintendo 64 days.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 184,969 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (9,631).
Star Wars: Galactic Racer™ | Official Launch Trailer
The launch trailer for Star Wars: Galactic Racer had not been up a full day when it passed 150,000 views. That is a big opening for this channel, where a new video usually spends its first day well short of ten thousand.
The trailer marks the game's release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The description calls it a reinvention of racing: players pilot speeders and podracers through the Galactic League, an unsanctioned circuit in the lawless Outer Rim. Fuse Games developed it, Secret Mode publishes it, and Lucasfilm Games worked with both.
The comment section moved even faster than the views, with more than ten times the comments of a usual first day for the channel's short videos. Much of it is a game of spot-the-cameo. Viewers point to Ben Quadinaros around the 1:50 mark, the podracer whose race in The Phantom Menace ended before it began, and to Sebulba, apparently racing on the player's side this time. Anakin's lines get recited, from the podrace and from the spinning trick in Revenge of the Sith. Others reach for comparisons: Burnout crossed with podracing, a Star Wars answer to Mario Kart, a return to the old Nintendo 64 racer. One request comes up more than once, a split-screen mode.
The channel posted a second copy of the trailer under the same title, and that one has drawn only a small fraction of the crowd. A compilation of famous Force moments from the same day also started well above the usual pace. It has been a busy stretch for Star Wars games: a week earlier the channel was showing gameplay from the Clone Wars tactics game Star Wars Zero Company.
