Skylabs Audio makes room for smaller speakers

Kevin Moll's only new upload explores compact cabinets, bass response and the difference speaker placement makes.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Nobody Wants Big Speakers Anymore. What Happened?Nobody Wants Big Speakers Anymore. What Happened?

"Nobody Wants Big Speakers Anymore. What Happened?" sounds like a farewell to giant cabinets, but Kevin Moll's description leaves them a place in the room. The real subject is what smaller speakers can do, and how changing a pair can change a stereo's personality.

Skylabs Audio's only new upload grew out of a week spent listening to vintage and new stand-mount speakers at the West Des Moines shop. It compares front-, rear- and bottom-ported cabinets with sealed acoustic-suspension designs, connecting those differences to placement and bass. Wharfedale, Triangle, Monitor Audio, Polk, Mission and EPI all figure in the exploration, which ranges from relaxed listening to speakers suited to music with more impact.

The upload has reached about 165,000 views and is the channel's busiest video for daily viewing. Its comments provide a cheerful counterargument to the title: people describe living rooms full of large speakers, buying a bigger house to accommodate more, and sharing their enthusiasm with a spouse. Others raise a practical wrinkle: once you buy stands for smaller speakers, floor-standing models can start to look like the simpler purchase.

Across the channel, weekly views topped half a million and subscribers increased modestly, although today's viewing pace is below the usual level. That weekly audience sits between the nearby PC-build channels PC BUILD-ASMR and Pc_Build; LGR Blerbs had a much quieter viewing week.

The older catalog keeps the value question alive. "My Biggest Fear Is Coming True" considers whether inexpensive CDs offer collectors an alternative to increasingly costly vinyl, while "5 Vintage Stereos Nobody Wants Right Now (Big Mistake!)" points toward overlooked receivers, turntables and bookshelf speakers. Small cabinets are part of a broader Skylabs conversation: how much listening pleasure needs to cost, or occupy.

What viewers say

  • I bought a bigger house just to store more speakers.

  • I'm lucky enough to be married to a woman who loves all the big speakers in our living room as much as I do.
  • The stands for stand mount speakers are often so expensive that it makes more sense to get floor standing speakers, and they won't fall off the stand and break.

  • This is why i started building speakers, i like solid multi layered dampened cabinets with no resonance with a 10" woofer. There's no replacement for displacement...

  • Kinda late but my first thought was people are starting to grow up with ear buds and gaming headphones which may not have the greatest bass response to begin with so the smaller speakers are a closer match to what their ears have grown accustomed to. Just a thought, as always enjoyed your video Kevin!
