Turretless tanks join Simple History's week of military oddities
The new armored-vehicle roundup ranges from Sweden's Strv 103 to a Chrysler nuclear-powered concept.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
History's Weirdest Tanks
Sweden dispensed with the turret; Chrysler imagined nuclear power. Simple History's "History's Weirdest Tanks" gathers very different answers to the same engineering problem, with Italy's gigantic Fiat 2000 and New Zealand's Bob Semple tank also in the lineup.
It is the newest of six uploads in a week particularly interested in equipment that doesn't look quite standard-issue. "Cambodia's 'Frankengun'" describes a rifle combining a modified Colt M16 core, Chinese Type 56 barrel components and a Soviet AKM wooden buttstock. "Weirdest Grenades" widens the cabinet of curiosities to boomerang bombs, sticky bombs and ceramic grenades.
The week's most watched upload, "An AK 47 M16 Hybrid", takes a smaller modification as its subject. Its animated account describes soldiers adapting captured Chinese magazines for M16 rifles during the Vietnam War. It also notes the compromise: larger loads could bring more jamming. That upload currently draws the most daily views of the channel's videos, followed by the tank roundup and the Cambodian hybrid.
Across the channel, the week brought roughly 3.5 million views. Daily viewing is now well above its usual level, although the subscriber total finished unchanged. Among nearby education channels, Extra History also had a busy week, while Wendover Productions is running below its usual daily viewing.
Not all the week's ingenuity involved elaborate machinery. "Duct Tape soldiers secret weapon" turns to Vesta Stoudt's push for stronger, waterproof ammunition-box tape: a decidedly less complicated answer to a military problem.
