SNL UK's "Nigerian Wicked" swaps Oz for LagOz
Ayoade Bamgboye and Cynthia Erivo get an egg-fueled falling-out, a live goat professor and a decidedly unglamorous Wizard in the Nollywood parody.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,109,266 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (68,636).
Nigerian Wicked | SNL UK
Glinda objects to Elphaba's hard-boiled egg, and witch school promptly becomes a much less welcoming place. Forget a grand musical introduction: Saturday Night Live UK's "Nigerian Wicked | SNL UK" starts its central friendship with a slap and an indignant response.
The mock trailer reimagines Wicked as a retro, low-budget Nollywood production, borrowing the name of Nigeria's film industry and relocating its witches to "LagOz." Ayoade Bamgboye plays the green-painted Elphaba, with Cynthia Erivo sharing the starring credits. For Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the Wicked films, it's a visit to a very different version of that world.
Here, Professor Goat is an actual goat. The destination is the "Emerald, white, and Emerald city," and the witches' wishes include a Birkin bag. Their Wizard greets them with a dance, while toy flying monkeys hang from visible strings. The sketch makes its deliberately threadbare production part of the joke rather than trying to hide it.
The Short reached about 1.5 million views in roughly thirty hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for the format. Its first-day comment section was more than thirty times as busy as usual, too.
Viewers are picking through the details: the camera crew reflected in a mirror, the green house, the LagOz wordplay and the elaborate Cynthia Erivo credit. Several recognize familiar Nollywood storytelling touches in the exaggerated dialogue, particularly Elphaba announcing that she has just been slapped.
Other SNL UK Shorts, including "Modern Music | SNL UK" and Ania Magliano and Paddy Young's Markle update, also drew unusually quick starts. But this sketch gives its audience something especially specific to discuss: what happens when the road to the Wizard runs through LagOz.
