Russell Brand watches Andy Burnham's speech and sees a 'political product'
The Labour politician's story about the Britain his father wanted gets picked apart, applause and all, in a segment that left the rest of Russell's faith-heavy weekend far behind.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 201,503 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (15,762).
No f*cking way...
Eight hours, nearly 100,000 views. That is how fast "No f*cking way..." moved, on a channel where a new video usually ends its whole first day somewhere around 16,000.
The title hides its subject, and the subject is Andy Burnham, the Labour politician who served as health secretary under Gordon Brown and became the first elected Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017. In the speech Russell takes apart, Burnham promises to build the Britain his father wanted to see. Russell sees something else. The description calls it another carefully manufactured political product, from the sentimental family story to applause that arrives right on cue. Behind that sits the question his other recent uploads keep asking, in titles like "The system always wins…": can a new person at the top change anything when the machinery underneath stays the same?
The comment section filled faster than the views alone would suggest. In eight hours it passed twice the total a typical video here collects in a full day. Much of the talk circles the same moments Russell does: the emotion in Burnham's voice and the timing of the clapping.
It is a sharp turn from the rest of his weekend. The uploads around it lean toward faith, among them a former Satanic priest's conversion story told to Ryan Miller, host of the Jesus People podcast. Even the strongest of those has about a third of the Burnham video's views. The channel as a whole had a quieter day than usual, and so did the other big political commentary channels, so one segment on one speech carried most of Russell's Monday.
