SteamOS as an Android app: Russ tries DroidDeck, Hades and all

The new app runs PC games through Valve's ARM64 Proton and FEX translation, and its walkthrough passed half a million views in about a day and a half.

Can an Android handheld really pretend to be a Steam Deck? Russ, the host of Retro Game Corps, spent Saturday's video finding out. DroidDeck is a new app that puts SteamOS on Android, leaning on Valve's ARM64 Proton and the FEX translation layer to run PC games, and his walkthrough covers installation, the features and a round of game tests. The orange Retroid Pocket 6 in his hands caught a few eyes too.

The comments are the fun part. The most liked one jokes about finally playing Hades on a drawer full of Android handhelds, and the next big thread asks when Valve will put out an official app of its own. Others point out that a rival app had just annoyed its users by announcing ads at game launch, and one viewer reports Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 running on a phone with a clip-on controller.

The other two uploads were more sober. Russ explained why he is sending back the Steam Frame, Valve's new headset, and gave the $150 Retroid Pocket Duo Lite a mixed verdict: build quality he praises, software and performance that fall short.

The Android video did the heavy lifting, and the channel's daily views ran at more than double their usual pace. Among the tech review channels close to its size, only jakkuh gained more views over the week, while Matt Talks Tech also kept busy and Tim Schofield had a quieter stretch.
