Pitching Ninja answers Brewers cheating talk with swing-and-miss math
Rob Friedman finds an ordinary contact rate behind Milwaukee's extraordinary World Series rally, challenging the premise of viral accusations.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 741,665 views a day, 19 times a normal first day on this channel (38,791).
Did the Brewers cheat? 🤔
Missing a pitch and choosing not to swing are not the same thing. That distinction is at the heart of Pitching Ninja's answer to social media posts questioning Milwaukee's hitting in World Series Game 3 against Tampa Bay.
Rob Friedman revisits the Brewers' two-out, eight-run fifth inning, then checks the suggestion that their lack of swings and misses was suspicious. His key correction: a whiff rate measures misses against pitches swung at, not every pitch delivered. Taking a ball does not count as making contact.
On that measure, he shows, Milwaukee actually missed more often than Tampa Bay. Set against other World Series games in the Statcast era, the Brewers' rate lands around the middle, not at some unprecedented extreme.
He also explains why the familiar image of stealing a catcher's finger signals does not fit this game: PitchCom transmits pitch calls electronically. "There are no signs, only buttons," Friedman says.
The Short reached roughly 388,000 views in eight hours, an unusually fast start for the channel. Its comment section was already many times busier than a typical full first day, with viewers discussing opposite-field hits, scouting and an approach that does not demand a home run every at-bat.
Friedman's other World Series uploads have examined the Yandy Díaz swing call and William Contreras' catching. Here, the decisive tool is simpler than a slow-motion replay: "Sometimes a little math ruins a perfectly good conspiracy theory."

That's not cheating, that's good scouting and talented hitting.@matts5430See it on YouTubePeople are so not used to how baseball used to be played that they think it's cheating.
This is what it's like when batters aren't just trying to hit a home run every at-bat@JasonBoyceSee it on YouTubeBrewers are just making a statement that they are the best Team in MLB this year. I'm not even a Brewers fan, I've been a Dodgers fan all my life. To me it's clear, The Brew Crew are simply playing some of the best baseball I've ever seen. They deserve to win.
