A longer video on People's channel usually gathers a couple of thousand views on its first day. Billy Crystal's interview passed 100,000 in 16 hours. Recent sit-downs with Sarah Jessica Parker and Wynonna Judd took several days to reach about 60,000 each.
Crystal, 78, begins with the Palisades fire, telling it plainly. "It went from 20 acres to 200 acres in 15 minutes," he says. He and his wife, Janice, left with photo albums, wedding albums and the clothes they were wearing. Then a neighbor called to confirm that their home of 46 years was gone. In the ruins they found a garden stone engraved with one word: "Laughter."
That loss became his one-man play, "860," named after the family's address. "Because a home is more than a street address," he explains. Writing it, he says, "was healing me at the same time." The show is in previews and opens October 21.
The second loss is his friend Rob Reiner. Crystal recalls stand-up at The Comedy Store leading Norman Lear to cast him beside Reiner on "All in the Family," and knowing early that "this is going to be a forever thing." Reiner later directed him in "The Princess Bride," where Crystal played the cranky Miracle Max under layers of makeup. Their late-night phone calls during Reiner's divorce turned into the split-screen calls in "When Harry Met Sally..." "That was pure us," Crystal says. Many viewers write about how he speaks of Reiner and Janice, and some share their own stories of losing a home.
Janice gets the warmest stretch. They met at the beach and had their first date 60 years ago. He describes a video of her tap-dancing for residents of the assisted living home where her 98-year-old mother lives. "Where does she find that joy?" he asks.
On growing older, he has no patience for one phrase. "I hate the term bucket list, because that assumes you're going to kick it," he says, before passing on Mel Brooks' rule: never eat fried food.
