Cranking a StuG III by hand: Mr Hewes' inertia start-up short
A September clip of the crew winding a German assault gun to life is busy again, on a channel still riding its 102.4 litre engine.
Why this story? The video is running at 27,361 views a day, 11 times its usual pace (2,543).

Before the engine fires, there is a long, rising whir, and two people at the back of a StuG III turning a crank as hard as they can. That is the whole of "German StuG III inertia start up", a short Mr Hewes posted on September 5. A month on, it has passed 200,000 views and is pulling in roughly ten times its usual daily audience.
The trick is an old one. Rather than relying on an electric starter, the crew spins up a heavy flywheel by hand, then engages it to turn the engine over, a backup that German armor of the Second World War carried for flat batteries and frozen mornings. One viewer says it sounds like a Stuka until the engine catches. Others remember friction-motor toys that worked the same way, or cranking cars back in the day, and plenty joke that it doubles as a morning workout for the crew.
The timing fits the channel's moment. Its short of a 1953 Mirrlees Blackstone engine starting has gone past six million views in three days, and the whole channel is running about ten times its normal daily pace. Maybe people who came for the giant diesel are digging into older clips?
The StuG short went up a day before the channel's Victory Show episode, the weekend the Leicestershire crew hauled rare wartime armor to Cosby. Among the vehicles listed for that video is a StuG III.
