Shims rescue an Amazon dowel maker on MatthiasWandel

The channel's only new upload reviews a tool that needed adjustment before it could produce good results.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Out of the box, the dowel maker didn't work. For MatthiasWandel, that makes a useful starting point rather than the end of a review: the description explains that patience and added shims eventually produced quite good results.

"Amazon dowel maker review, mine back in stock." reached roughly 138,000 views, making this week's sole upload the channel's strongest source of daily viewing. It also includes an update on his own dowel makers and the challenges of getting them to the United States.

The comments have taken the engineering invitation seriously. One viewer proposes changing which reference face the clamp pulls against; another suggests an adjustable centering clamp for different wood sizes. Elsewhere, someone imagines the mountain of dowels left behind by all that testing. It's a particularly fitting image for a channel whose description promises an engineer's approach to woodworking.

Across the channel, views were close to their usual daily level and the subscriber count stayed unchanged. It was a smaller viewing week than those of the nearby DIY channels, including Tom Stanton and John Malecki, while RUDAN BROTHERS had a substantial week of both views and subscriber growth.

Dowel-making remains a thread beyond the new review. The older "Your Dowel Maker sucks... Unless its one of these!" is also among the channel's busiest uploads, explaining a tangential blade arrangement designed to make cutting easier and smoother. The dust-collector muffler from the previous note continues drawing attention too, but this week's fresh puzzle is how to get square wood reliably round.

  • I can imagine the mountain of different size dowels at your workshop from all the testing and tweaking of dowelmakers

  • Shimming is the solution you had to implement. But it probably doesn't need more precision. It just needs to be designed to clamp to the correct reference face. If the screw pulled the die up to the blade they would hit their intended error margins.

  • It would be cool to add an adjustable centering clamp to accomodate differnt size pieces of wood, maybe as an add on feature.
