James Patterson, a shark and an orca: Man Carrying Thing reads MrBeast again

A month after reading MrBeast's book until he physically couldn't, the books channel came back with a longer essay on what the novel, co-written with James Patterson, says about literature.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Mr Beast and the Death of literatureMr Beast and the Death of literature

One video, a big return. "Mr Beast and the Death of literature" is the only upload on Man Carrying Thing this week, and it is a sequel of sorts. Four weeks ago the channel, whose about page sums itself up in a single word ("Books."), posted "reading Mr. Beast's book until i physically can't." That one has passed five million views. This time the tags put James Patterson's name beside Jimmy Donaldson's, and the essay goes further into the novel and the press around it.

The comments give a sense of what is inside. Viewers keep pointing at the book's game premise and its echoes of "The Most Dangerous Game" and Squid Game, at a scene with MrBeast swimming among sharks, at an orca sentence that several people quote back in disbelief, and at the way the video marks up the prose like a teacher grading an essay. One popular thread wonders aloud who actually did the writing. Plenty of viewers simply say they are glad to see a longer video from the channel.

It passed a million and a half views in three days, and lifted the whole channel above its usual daily pace. Five thousand new subscribers arrived over the week, which leaves Man Carrying Thing a little under 20,000 short of a million.

Among comedy and sketch channels of a similar size, Rankexa had the biggest week and Mike and Joelle were close behind it, while Toby Stubbs ran quieter than usual. Man Carrying Thing sits in the middle of that group, in the same place for subscribers and for views gained.
