Idris Elba takes his astronauts from re-entry to the seabed in Above the Below
Lionsgate's trailer for the survival thriller he co-directs keeps its plot hidden, and viewers keep saying they like it that way.

Above the Below (2026) Official Trailer - Idris Elba, Caitlin FitzGerald, Hero Fiennes Tiffin
Idris Elba brings a crew home from space and then hands them to the ocean. In Above the Below, which he co-directs with Martin Owen and stars in alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, three astronauts survive a disaster in orbit only to crash-land in the deep, cut off from mission control with their oxygen running low.
The trailer skips the warm-up. It opens in a cabin flashing red as water pours in, two crew members fighting their way into diving gear. "I don't think I can do this," FitzGerald's character says. Elba's character answers in two words: "Just breathe."
From there it cuts between a capsule dropping toward a storm on damaged parachutes, an astronaut sinking into dark water and Elba walking a high-tech control room in front of a wall of screens, while the title arrives one word at a time.
What it leaves out is what the comments keep coming back to. Plenty of viewers say they finished it knowing almost nothing about the story and are glad of it. Gamers see Subnautica in the premise, and one popular joke files the film as a Pacific Rim prequel, a nod to Elba's turn as Stacker Pentecost.
Lionsgate posted it as a Short, and in twelve hours it passed 750,000 views; the channel's Shorts usually manage about 14,000 in a whole first day. The comments came in faster still, at many times the usual pace.
Some viewers call this Elba's first time directing. His feature debut was actually Yardie, back in 2018. This one asks more of him: he is behind the camera and inside the sinking crew. The film opens only in theaters December 4.
