The cast's 'Love of Street Fighter' pulls IGN Movie Trailers into the arcade

A short featurette for Kitao Sakurai's live-action film, out October 16, has commenters debating Guile, Akuma and how much the actors really played.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 97,424 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (6,588).

After two days of Christmas films, with Johnny Depp's Scrooge and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Santa (as we reported here), the trailer channel's busiest new upload comes from a very different place: a fighting game. Its short Street Fighter featurette passed 50,000 views within nine hours. A new short there usually ends its whole first day below 7,000.

The clip, billed as the "Love of Street Fighter" featurette, has the cast talking about what Capcom's games mean to them, two weeks before Paramount puts the film in theaters. The story is set in 1993. Estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are pulled back into combat when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament, and the description promises a conspiracy behind it. The cast is a strange and cheerful mix: Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang, the wrestlers Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, Jason Momoa, 50 Cent, the country singer Orville Peck and David Dastmalchian. Directing is Kitao Sakurai, best known for The Eric Andre Show and the hidden-camera comedy Bad Trip.

The comment section moved several times faster than usual, and it reads like a character-select screen. One viewer hopes Rhodes's Guile gets his Sonic Boom and his story with Charlie Nash, others question the choices for Akuma and Vega, and someone simply asks where Sagat is. Others remember the arcade quarters they lost to Akuma. A running thread wonders how much the cast really played as kids, pointing to behind-the-scenes footage in which, commenters say, the pro player Justin Wong shows Centineo the moves on an arcade cabinet.

The channel's other uploads from the same day, a Carrie clip from Mike Flanagan's Prime Video series among them, are still in the thousands.
