"Our crime and punishment": Godzilla Minus Zero's darker second trailer
Takashi Yamazaki's sequel opens on a doctor counting victims, and viewers are just as taken with what it leaves out.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 3,388,042 views a day, 272 times a normal first day on this channel (12,436).
GODZILLA MINUS ZERO | Official Trailer 2
The second trailer for GODZILLA MINUS ZERO begins in a hospital rather than a city in flames. A doctor recalls the day Godzilla struck, when "hundreds of victims flooded this hospital," and adds of one patient: "She had no business surviving."
From there it moves outward. A wooden building is flung into the sky, civilians run for cover, a broadcaster reports failed bombing attempts, and a pilot admits, "I'm scared to death." The stakes are spelled out on screen in short lines: "RETURNING TO ZERO IS NOT AN OPTION" and "A CHOICE MUST BE MADE," before the title card arrives with the words "OUR CRIME AND PUNISHMENT." The description sets the scene two years after war and Godzilla left Japan in ruins, just as a fragile peace takes hold.
The trailer passed about 2.8 million views in its first 16 hours on TOHO's North American channel, and the comment section filled faster still, more than a hundred times busier than the channel's usual first day.
What viewers talk about most is an absence. King Ghidorah is not shown, and many thank TOHO for keeping the surprise for the cinema, though some say they can already hear his roar. Others single out a woman trapped in her house as gravity seems to shift around her. And at the one-minute mark, Godzilla's blue atomic breath sweeps across the screen, the moment quoted again and again.
Yamazaki is once more credited with the writing, directing and visual effects, as on Godzilla Minus One. This one was shot in Japan as the country's first production Filmed For IMAX, with early IMAX screenings on November 3 and a wide release on November 6.

That snippet of the woman trapped in her house because of the gravity fluctuations was absolutely terrifying. Looks like Ghidorah will truly live up to his title as the King of Terror.
