Storm Austen to arrive overnight
Heavy rain, strong winds and possible travel disruption are the main warnings in Laura Tobin's Storm Austen forecast for Good Morning Britain. The season's first named storm was forecast to arrive overnight into Friday, with southwestern areas most affected.
Tobin follows the front eastward across southwest England and Wales, warning of coastal gusts reaching 80 mph and large waves. Her presentation separates the forecast into pressure, rainfall and wind gusts, making it possible to follow how the different parts of the system develop.
"Actually this is a new chart, we've never used this before," she says as she introduces the display.
The short bulletin has drawn more than 200,000 views in less than a day, far beyond the program's usual opening-day audience for Shorts. It is a notably strong response to a practical weather update rather than one of the interviews or studio debates that feature among the channel's most-watched uploads.
Tobin also points to another low-pressure system potentially arriving on Saturday, raising the possibility of a second named storm of the season.
