France: Fire destroys historic covered food market in Paris • FRANCE 24 English
The roof is gone. Daylight footage in FRANCE 24 English's report shows the Marché des Enfants-Rouges with its roof collapsed and its interior charred, as firefighters keep spraying water onto what is left of the covered food market in the Marais.
The fire broke out around 3 a.m. Jean-Marc Ferrandery, who owns the Café du Marais nearby, describes what he saw: "The flames were rising above the roof. It was a massive fire." He ended up sheltering about 15 people who had been evacuated from surrounding homes. "Firefighters came to ask if I could take in people who were evacuated because they were cold," he says.
The market dates back to 1615 and is billed as the oldest food market in Paris. In recent years it was best known for its street food stalls, a lunchtime stop for locals and tourists alike. Around 150 firefighters stopped the blaze from reaching the neighboring buildings, and no one died, but the market itself could not be saved. The description says the vendors have lost everything.
Emmanuel Grégoire, identified on screen as Mayor of Paris, says the cause is still unknown and an investigation is underway. City officials have pledged to rebuild the market and help vendors find temporary spots in the meantime. Under the report, people recall stalls they shopped at, from fresh fish to an organic produce stand, and wonder where the traders will set up next.
The Short passed about 69,000 views in its first 12 hours. Another food story ran close behind it on the channel: Selina Sykes's report on a cyberattack that French supermarket chains say pushed up the temperature of refrigerators in hundreds of stores and spoiled their stock.

How truly sad, especially for the vendors who found a home for their businesses in the market. I'm glad that at least no lives were lost and the surrounding buildings were largely unharmed, but I do feel horrible for the vendors. I hope that they are able to find new places to set up shop while the market is rebuilt.
