Neil deGrasse Tyson says the flying car already runs under New York
Between bites of a wing on Hot Ones Game Night, the astrophysicist moves the third dimension from the sky to the subway.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 450,929 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (24,442).
Neil deGrasse Tyson says we ALREADY HAVE flying cars??🚗✈️
Asked why we still don't have flying cars, Neil deGrasse Tyson has a short answer: "We actually do." The host's guess is Area 51, and Tyson plays along for a beat ("Yeah, I'm not authorized to comment further on that") before giving the real explanation, which is much less classified.
It starts in traffic. A city's roads are a two-dimensional surface, he says, and the dream of a flying car is really the dream of a third dimension to escape into. That dimension does not have to point up. "We already have flying cars, they're called the subway!" He finishes with a saltier line naming the New York City system, and the host across the table bursts out laughing.
The clip comes from Tyson's new Hot Ones Game Night appearance, and it drew around 275,000 views in its first ten hours, far more than a usual Short here gets in a full day. The comments came in even faster: a few hundred, against the handful a typical Short collects on its first day.
Many of them argue about definitions. Helicopters get nominated, an airplane is recast as a flying bus, and some viewers picture sky traffic as bad as the ground kind. Others mostly mention his timing, delivering the punchline with his eyes on the wing and then biting into it.
It is not even Tyson's biggest Short of the week. A clip from the day before, in which he blows Joe Santagato's mind with an idea about time travel, has drawn even more views.

A half-minute Short with a lot of definitions to argue about. The comment count stands out even more than the views.
