Steve McManaman did not hold back on Kylian Mbappé's opener at the Camp Nou. The ball came off a clearance, deflected, and ended up in the net, and McManaman called it "probably the luckiest one he's gonna score all season."
It was not even the luckiest of the night for Real Madrid. Mbappé scored again in the 89th minute, after Raphinha had brought Barcelona level, and that second goal settled the first Clásico of the LaLiga season 2-1 for Madrid. ESPN FC's highlights of the match drew close to a million views since yesterday.
The reel comes with ESPN's own call: Ian Darke on play-by-play and McManaman, who won two Champions League titles with Real Madrid, beside him. Darke has Mbappé's opener "out of nowhere" stunning the home crowd. A couple of minutes later Lamine Yamal finds an open net and misses it. "Can you believe that?" Darke asks. McManaman's reply is the gentlest line of the evening: "He is human after all."
The comments arrived almost 19 times faster than on a usual first day for the channel, and much of the talk is about Andriy Lunin. Many commenters say he was standing in for Thibaut Courtois and single out his saves. Others replay Jude Bellingham's dribbling, a small touch by Eduardo Camavinga before an assist, and Arda Güler's passing.
The channel is still working through the result. Gab Marcotti, Sid Lowe and Alex Kirkland have a follow-up arguing that José Mourinho is "completely validated" by the win.
