Things we can learn from the video

Press to jump

  1. 0:23Philadelphia's second-half rally gathers force through defensive stops, LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey.
  2. 3:47Iman Shumpert credits James with embracing Philadelphia's gritty defensive identity.
  3. 4:40Brian Windhorst highlights Philadelphia's chemistry and speed compared with difficult starts for previous James teams.
  4. 8:10The panel identifies backcourt turnovers and limited big-man involvement as Cleveland's problems under pressure.
  5. 9:09Shumpert explains Philadelphia's decision to pressure Cleveland across the full length of the court.

The defense changed everything. Philadelphia erased a 29-point deficit against Cleveland, and ESPN's NBA Today panel found plenty to unpack beyond the comeback itself: full-court pressure, backcourt turnovers and LeBron James finding a connection with his new home crowd.

That discussion was ESPN's most-watched new upload of the week, approaching half a million views. Malika Andrews hosts Michael Wilbon, Brian Windhorst and Iman Shumpert, whose explanation centers on Philadelphia deciding to pressure Cleveland the length of the floor. Windhorst supplies the playground translation: taking the other team's cookies.

Shumpert's way of explaining the game becomes a subject of its own in the comments. Viewers single out his clear breakdowns, his exchanges with Windhorst and his animated response to that cookie-stealing description. There is a relevant connection behind the desk, too: Shumpert and James won a championship together in Cleveland.

Elsewhere in a packed slate of 45 uploads, NBA Tip-Off offers a more reflective moment. Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley thank Ernie Johnson following his announcement that he will leave Inside the NBA after the season. The clip drew nearly 190,000 views in its opening hours.

The strongest viewing momentum now belongs to First Take's discussion of whether Indianapolis should trade Jonathan Taylor, followed by its examination of the Cowboys' defense. ESPN's subscribers were unchanged over the week, while daily viewing is currently about half its usual level. That slowdown is not universal among its sports neighbors: NBA on ESPN and The Pat McAfee Show are running above their usual daily viewing levels. On ESPN itself, the newest football debates are supplying the busiest viewing after basketball supplied the week's largest new upload.
