Chadwick Boseman, Ryan Coogler and the making of Wakanda, on Du Cinema
The film-essay channel's only new video of the week looks back at how Black Panther came together, while a five-week-old essay on End of Watch passes 12 million views.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
when an audition changed the MCU forever
Du Cinema posted a single video this week, and it is a tribute. "when an audition changed the MCU forever" follows Chadwick Boseman from his path to King T'Challa through to the building of Wakanda with director Ryan Coogler and the cast. It also looks at where Black Panther sits in the Marvel story, from its Avengers ties to the legacy the late actor left behind. The essay drew close to 24,000 views on its first day, and the comment section reads mostly as a place to remember Boseman.
The channel's real engine is still older work. "when a police movie is too realistic", the essay on David Ayer's End of Watch, has passed 12 million views in five weeks. Its description explains that much of the film's documentary feel comes from Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña spending months training with the Los Angeles police. Behind it, the City of God essay, about Fernando Meirelles casting residents of Rio's favelas instead of professional actors, keeps finding viewers three months on.
Views ran close to the channel's usual pace, and it now sits within a few thousand subscribers of half a million. Among the movie channels around its size, Movie House is having the busiest week.
