"Load-bearing drywall": Cy Porter's attic tags point to thin air
One roof truss sits on drywall and another has no wall at all, and the engineers Porter calls out are answering in the comments.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,328,505 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (72,512).
Is the sticker wrong or is the builder wrong?
Fourteen hours after it went up, Cy Porter's short tour of an attic had passed a million views, far beyond what a CyFy Short usually manages in a whole first day.
The setup takes seconds. "Hi, this is for all you engineers," Porter says, flashlight in hand, and points the beam at a red tag with a white X. "That's our load-bearing sticker," he explains: the spot where a roof truss is supposed to rest on a wall.
It doesn't. Up close, the truss is sitting on drywall instead of the wall framing. "So maybe this is like load-bearing drywall," Porter offers, deadpan, before the plainer version: "It is not resting on the actual framing." A few steps over, a second tagged truss has nothing beneath it. "There's no wall here," he says, while the trusses around it sit where they should. That leaves the title to ask the obvious: "Is the sticker wrong or is the builder wrong?"
The engineers he greeted showed up. The comments came in nearly three times as fast as on a usual first day, with self-described engineers and engineering students weighing in, and a running joke about wireless, Bluetooth-style load bearing, with the sticker doing the structural work.
The Short comes in the middle of a busy week of builder-focused uploads, from a Lennar video the day before to the tongue-in-cheek "DEBBIE Task Force," short for Department of Ending Bad Builders In Existence. And walls have carried Porter before: his most watched Short of all time is "Germany Wall VS America Wall."
