Who controls cruise Wi-Fi? Doug Parker explores a satellite shift
Cruise News Today's biggest upload also covers Carnival Freedom's redesigned funnel after its Marseille dry dock.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Cruise Lines Could Lose Control of Onboard Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi drew the biggest audience. Among Doug Parker's six Cruise News Today uploads, "Cruise Lines Could Lose Control of Onboard Wi-Fi" reached about 67,000 views, putting the everyday cost of staying connected at sea at the center of the week.
Parker reports that the FCC has approved new SpaceX satellites designed to connect directly to smartphones. His report raises the possibility of passengers bypassing expensive onboard internet packages, rather than announcing that those packages are disappearing. Viewers are discussing pricing, inconsistent connections and a practical question: how would a satellite signal reach someone inside a steel ship?
The same bulletin has a more visible shipboard change: Carnival Freedom's lower-profile whale-tail funnel. According to the report, the redesign is intended to open access to more ports following the ship's dry dock in Marseille. An expanded casino is also part of the refit.
Elsewhere, Parker covered fleet reshuffles, cabin rules for younger adult passengers and earlier sailings for Royal Caribbean's Hero of the Seas. The newest bulletin, "Cruise Passengers Targeted by Convincing Email Scam," has the strongest daily viewing momentum, while the Wi-Fi report continues drawing a substantial audience several days after publication.
The subscriber count held steady, and daily channel views are currently less than half their usual level. Across nearby travel channels, Nikki Delventhal had a particularly large week; Sophie Nadeau also added more weekly views than Cruise News Today. Parker's channel nevertheless added roughly a quarter-million views, with connectivity costs supplying its most watched new story.

The problem with cruise WiFi is, it doesn’t matter how premium it is or how much you pay for it, it’s never a smooth issue free experience. They either don’t cater for all the metal on the ship or they don’t cater for the amount of passengers onboard
