A shopping spree from October 2001, back on Conan O'Brien's channel

Aired weeks after 9/11 to help New York's economy, the remote sends Conan and his staff out with money to spend, and viewers are asking about Pierre.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

The sketch first aired on October 5, 2001, and its premise was a small act of civic duty: New York's economy needed help, so Conan took his staff shopping. Twenty-five years later, almost to the day, it is the week's big upload on the channel that keeps Late Night with Conan O'Brien alive in clips, with close to 145,000 views and still pulling in far more each day than anything else here.

The comments read like a reunion. Viewers recall the strange weeks after 9/11, when making people laugh was a delicate job, and they keep naming two familiar faces: announcer Joel Godard, whose odd résumé one viewer lays out at length, and Pierre, with several asking whether this was where they first met him. A parole question around the 1:40 mark is the line people quote back, alongside a giant cheesecake handed around for bites and a vintage Captain Kirk figure that one viewer owns too.

The only other new clip, a Dr. Arroyo health segment on sleep apnea (its description cheerfully admits he may not be a licensed medical professional), started more softly. Behind them, a 2008 writers' strike bit with MIT physicist Peter Fisher, built on a wedding ring spin record, keeps turning.

Overall the channel ran right at its usual pace and added about a thousand subscribers. Among talk show channels near its size it gained the third-most views, close behind Very Important People, while LADbible Entertainment had the biggest week by far.
