'Or we will end the ICC': Rubio's ultimatum lands on Navi Pillay's Nobel day
Channel 4 News pairs the new US sanctions with the prize for a former judge of the court, then hands the analysis to two senior British lawyers.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 650,130 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (41,165).
Trump sanctions ICC as Nobel Peace Prize goes to Navi Pillay
Navi Pillay was at a legal conference in Nuremberg when she learned she had won the Nobel Peace Prize. Within the same news cycle, Washington tightened its sanctions on the International Criminal Court, where she once sat as a judge. Channel 4 News put both in one report, and it drew about 370,000 views in its first nine hours, far beyond a usual first day for the broadcaster's regular videos.
Jonathan Rugman's report opens with Pillay in Nuremberg, telling the room that the award "strengthens my conviction that we must stand together in defense of the rule of law." It traces a career that ran from South Africa to the UN tribunal for Rwanda and, later, to chairing a UN inquiry on Gaza, which is why official Israeli government accounts denounced both her and the Nobel Committee.
Then the scene moves to The Hague. Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, delivers the line that gives the piece its edge: "Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC." Geoffrey Robertson KC, who led the UN war crimes court in Sierra Leone, calls the US "hysterical and immoral." In the studio, former Attorney General Dominic Grieve KC says the Americans are "frankly going rogue," and weighs whether the court can survive the financial pressure, or whether a reported six-month grace period leaves room to negotiate.
The comment section moved even faster than the views: more than a thousand comments in nine hours, around four times what a regular video usually gathers in a whole day. Most of the talk is about the sanctions and the court's future, with a smaller share of it about Pillay herself.
The same day brought a second fast starter, a Short profiling Sagal Abdi-Wali, the Holborn and St Pancras by-election winner. The description says she is the first British Somali woman elected as an MP, and that she arrived in Britain as a child refugee.

The numbers
