Family, neighbors in shock following deadly mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania
A man who moved away from Erie to leave a difficult life behind came back and lost the people he loved most. "I'm so broken, man," he tells KDKA-TV reporter Jessica Riley. Riley's short report from Erie, Pennsylvania, gives the shooting that left nine people dead, including children, a human face.
Riley stands outside the cordoned-off scene. Police said the suspected shooter, who is among the dead, was related to seven of the eight victims. The report includes doorbell-camera audio from the street, with rapid gunshots and screams, before it turns to the neighbors. One calls what happened "horrific and unimaginable."
Family friend Lisa Simmers asks how a man could do this to his own family. "It's senseless. It really is," she says. Photos show one of the women who was killed, who was heavily pregnant. The father of one of the victims says he lost his daughter and her mother, the person he says he was "fighting to stay alive for." Simmers ends on what still troubles her: what was happening inside the house "while we were all just standing outside."
The report has drawn about 280,000 views in just over a day. The station's Shorts usually start with a couple of thousand. A longer police update on the suspect's family ties also drew far more viewers than usual, and the channel's daily views rose to about five times their normal level.
This piece follows the police chief's description of the scene, as we reported here. KDKA-TV's weekend coverage has also reported that memorial trees are planned for the two young children who were killed.
