Erie police chief calls mass shooting scene "heartbreaking" in KDKA-TV report
Nine people died, including two children, and CBS Pittsburgh's short report carries Chief Rick Lorah's first public words from the night.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 489,164 views a day, 207 times a normal first day on this channel (2,365).
9 dead, including 2 children, in reported mass shooting in Erie, Pa.
"I want to be candid with our community." Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah begins CBS Pittsburgh's short report with that sentence, spoken to reporters at night. He goes on to call it "one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered."
The KDKA-TV anchor then sets out what was known. Police were called to Perry Street around 5 p.m. on Friday after a man was seen firing a gun before entering a home. Two women were found dead in the street, and more victims were found inside the residence. After an hours-long standoff, the suspect was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nine people died, two of them children.
Lorah gives few details. "Out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, I will not discuss the specific details of what our officers encountered today," he says, adding that police "will not speculate about a motive."
The report passed 400,000 views within 17 hours, far beyond what a new Short on the channel usually draws. Several commenters who say they live in Erie write that this video is how they first heard the news.
The station kept reporting through the weekend. A Short from KDKA's Jessica Riley at the scene and a longer video of the Erie police update also drew unusually large audiences. On Sunday, the station reported that police say the suspect was related to seven of the eight victims, and Riley returned with reaction from family members and neighbors.

The numbers
The report's first day stands far apart from the channel's usual pace for Shorts, and two companion videos also started unusually fast.
