Video surging 17x the video's usual pace

Laimbeer and Rodman did shoot threes, Broadcast Boys' viewers insist

Eight days after it went up, the basketball guessing video is gathering views faster than ever, and its comment section has become a gentle history lesson on the Bad Boys Pistons and the 1990s Bulls.

Why this story? The video is running at 76,450 views a day, 17 times its usual pace (4,483).

THE GREATEST NBA PLAYERS TO NEVER HIT A 3!! 🏀 #nba #basketball #sports #hoopsTHE GREATEST NBA PLAYERS TO NEVER HIT A 3!! 🏀 #nba #basketball #sports #hoops

Most days, "THE GREATEST NBA PLAYERS TO NEVER HIT A 3!!" would add a few thousand views. It is now picking up around 76,000 a day, about seventeen times its own usual pace, and has passed 128,000 in total. It was already carrying the channel when we last wrote about it, as we reported here, and it has picked up speed since.

The premise is a basketball trivia trap: name the great players who went a whole career without making a three. From what viewers describe, the hosts reached for big men and ended up throwing out names. Vlade Divac, Bill Laimbeer, Dale Davis and Joakim Noah all came up. That is where the comments took over.

Laimbeer is the sore spot. The Detroit center was one of the rare big men of the 1980s who stepped out and shot from deep, and viewers keep pointing out that he made plenty. Several defend Divac's touch on catch-and-shoot looks. The longest thread is about Dennis Rodman, the rebounding specialist of the Pistons and the Bulls. Commenters trade memories of Chicago home crowds urging him to shoot whenever a defender backed off, and of the night he hit three in a row before being taken out of the game.

The lift reaches beyond one video. The whole channel is drawing close to three times its usual daily views. An NBA Double Wheel of Doom draft and an alignment chart video from the same stretch sit alongside it, and lately the hosts have also turned to baseball, with uploads on Munetaka Murakami and on World Series winners who won without their best player. Judging by one popular request in the comments, viewers would happily take more of the "WHO?!" kind.

  • Dennis on his birthday, hit 3 in a row for the bulls, and then Phil took him out of the game. I was upset they didn't let him try for a fourth in a row.
