Putin wants Trump and Xi at one table to talk about Ukraine
Bloomberg News' few-second Short on the proposal was followed hours later by Trump's reply, which moves the subject to nuclear weapons.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 296,470 views a day, 60 times a normal first day on this channel (4,938).
Putin Proposes Summit With Trump, China's Xi on Ukraine
A three-way summit, on paper. Vladimir Putin has proposed a meeting with Donald Trump and Xi Jinping about ending the war in Ukraine, and Bloomberg News put the news into one of its briefest formats: a narrated Short lasting only a few seconds.
It shows archival footage of Putin walking, Trump at a rally and Xi passing a line of military personnel. The narrator cites The Wall Street Journal's reporting that the goal is to end the war, over a shot of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and adds that "Trump hasn't agreed to a meeting, but could be receptive to the idea." According to the description, Putin raised the idea during an Oct. 9 phone call with Trump.
The Short had about 222,000 views in its first 14 hours, far past the channel's usual first day for a Short. Its comment section filled even faster than the views would suggest, with hundreds of comments where a typical Bloomberg Short gets a handful. Much of the discussion asks whether talks would bring peace or only a pause in the fighting.
The follow-up came the same day and is also starting well above the channel's usual pace for a Short. In "Trump Says He's Open to Trilateral Meeting With Putin, Xi," Trump says he would take the meeting, but "not so much for Ukraine." He wants it scheduled around denuclearization instead. Being willing to meet, it turns out, is not the same as agreeing on what the meeting is for.
The interest fits this channel's pattern. Bloomberg News calls itself the first word in business news, but every one of its most-watched Shorts shows leaders meeting: Putin welcoming Xi to the Kremlin, Putin receiving Narendra Modi, and Kim Jong Un embracing Putin in Pyongyang.
