Video surging 37x the video's usual pace

Kevin Hart roasts the Smart Tech staff, and Seth Rogen takes the heat

A two-minute scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin, posted on Big Screen Laughs, sat quiet for a day and then pulled in close to 90,000 views.

Why this story? The video is running at 77,770 views a day, 37 times its usual pace (2,090).

"Kevin Hart Roasts Smart Tech Staff [Kevin Hart Scene] | The 40-Year-Old Virgin" lifts one of the busiest few minutes out of Judd Apatow's 2005 comedy, and it is on Big Screen Laughs, a channel built on favorite scenes from comedies old and new. The setup is simple. Hart plays a customer with no patience left, and he unloads on Cal (Seth Rogen) on the shop floor while Andy (Steve Carell) watches the standoff escalate. By the end Jay (Romany Malco) is in tears over his breakup, which is not where anyone expected a retail argument to go.

Hart was still years from his run as an arena headliner and box-office lead when he filmed this small part. That may be part of the fun now: a star in miniature, stealing a scene from a cast that included Carell, Rogen and Paul Rudd. The tags lean on improv, timing and rapid-fire delivery, and the film's loose, riffing style is a big part of why it is still quoted.

And quoted it is. The comment section reads like a group of friends finishing each other's lines, with Hart's grievance about being hit with words too big to understand, which he decides to take as disrespect, coming up again and again. Several viewers drift toward Jane Lynch, who plays Paula, the store's manager, and her famously inappropriate interest in Andy.

The clip went up on October 2 and spent its first day with a few thousand views, about what a new upload here usually gets. Then it caught on. On its busiest day it brought in roughly as many viewers as the entire channel gained above an ordinary day.

The rest of the week belonged to Damon Wayans: a run of scenes from Major Payne, from a violent bedtime story to a bullet given as a first-date gift, each still near a thousand views. A Ted 2 scene, Giovanni Ribisi kidnapping the bear at Comic-Con, has done better, but the Smart Tech floor is where the crowd went.
