A 2072 World Cup? Barca Legion's viewers check the calendar

The far-future title has prompted jokes about growing old, alongside a practical objection to the tournament year.

The Secret That Will Make the 2072 World Cup the Best

Viewers have a scheduling objection. Barca Legion's "The Secret That Will Make the 2072 World Cup the Best" looks decades ahead, but several commenters point out that its chosen year does not fit the men's tournament's established four-year cycle.

If that cycle continues, the neighboring editions would fall in 2070 and 2074, not 2072. That makes the title's date a talking point before anyone even gets to its promise of the best World Cup.

The Short has drawn more than 300,000 views before its first full day is over, well beyond the channel's usual first-day audience in the tens of thousands. Comments have already passed three times the usual first-day total, too.

Much of the conversation turns the distant date into comedy: viewers picture themselves as grandparents, push imaginary tournaments even further into the future, or propose Mars as a host. One would settle for a final in Antarctica.

It's a different conversation from Barca Legion's other recent football uploads, which cover Ronaldo, goalkeeper training and players known by their full names. Here, the replies are less concerned with who might lift the trophy than how old everyone would be when it happens.
