Parents learned of childcare assaults a week later, Four Corners reports
The family's account to Adele Ferguson has drawn an unusually large audience for an ABC News In-depth Short.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 93,192 views a day, 9.6 times a normal first day on this channel (9,680).
‘How did I not know?’: For months, a childcare worker was assaulting their son
CCTV recorded repeated assaults on young children at a childcare center. But a week passed after the final recorded assaults before the center told one child's parents what had happened, according to Four Corners.
The parents have shared their experience with reporter Adele Ferguson in the hope of bringing about change. Their identity is protected by law. The Short's title, " 'How did I not know?': For months, a childcare worker was assaulting their son", puts a parent's question at the center of the report.
Posted by ABC News In-depth, the clip reached roughly 90,000 views in its first 22 hours, approaching ten times the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts.
Four Corners says the CCTV captured assaults across three days in 2024. The worker pleaded guilty in June to common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm, receiving a four-year prison sentence with eligibility for parole after a year.
The family's account forms part of Four Corners' child-safety investigation, Monstrous. Their decision to speak brings the delay in notifying parents into the investigation alongside the assaults themselves.
