Bystanders, paramedics and his younger brother Sione help Jamil Hopoate into an ambulance after an incident in Brookvale traffic. In 9 News Australia's report, the former NRL player is later undergoing a mental health assessment at Northern Beaches Hospital.

The footage shows police and members of the public restraining Hopoate beside a car. Earlier CCTV and phone recordings show him attempting to enter a vehicle, clinging to a moving car and approaching buses. Witnesses describe the incident unfolding during the evening rush hour.

Reporting outside the hospital, James Wilson says police are still investigating, but at that stage Hopoate is unlikely to face criminal charges.

The report drew about 149,000 views in 21 hours, far beyond the channel's usual opening for a Short. A separate 9 News Australia upload about the same incident also attracted an unusually large audience. Both focus on the roadside intervention, with the main report following Hopoate's transfer to hospital.
