Barking dogs brought Daniel Shoppee and his parents outside their Port Melbourne home before dawn. According to 9 News Australia's report, his family stayed inside as he went to investigate, then heard his mother screaming.

Security footage shows a masked figure carrying a machete approaching a residential porch. Reporter Julia Passarelli says Shoppee had followed a suspicious vehicle down the street before returning to find an armed intruder in the front yard.

Shoppee disarmed the intruder during a confrontation that left him with a broken hand, the report says. Speaking afterwards, he describes both the adrenaline of the encounter and the shock that followed.

"In that moment there's so much adrenaline going. It was a lot of yelling, a lot of screaming," Shoppee says.

Passarelli reports that police told Shoppee the suspect had been released from custody the previous week and has now been remanded again. For Shoppee, the experience continued after the immediate danger had passed: "You are, you're scared, and you start replaying it that night in your head."
