Melbourne father fights off machete-wielding teen intruder

Daniel Shopee had gone outside to check a suspicious car when a scream sent him running back towards his Port Melbourne home.

In an interview with 7NEWS Australia, he describes seeing a masked intruder approaching his mother with a machete raised above his head. "Mum let out an almighty scream," Shopee says.

The report includes security camera footage of the confrontation. Shopee explains how he intervened: "I was able to grab his arm and knock the machete down." A physical fight followed, according to the report.

Reporter Georgia Bennett-Murphy identifies the intruder as a teenager and says the attempted break-in happened on Wednesday morning. Shopee appears in the interview with his hand in a cast.

Bennett-Murphy places the incident within the debate over crime and proposed bail reforms ahead of Victoria's state election. Voters are due to go to the polls on 28 November. The report moves from Shopee's account of the confrontation to the broader question of how political leaders propose to respond to community safety concerns.
