Calendars, a three-year wait and Katie Neal's ADHD diagnosis on 5 News

Professor Peter Fonagy's review warns of over-diagnosis, but much of the report, and of the comment section, is about how long people wait for help.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 136,810 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (6,201).

Katie Neal keeps her days in order with calendars. Getting to the diagnosis behind them took three years. Her story opens Anna Geary's report for 5 News on an official review in England of ADHD and autism, a Short that passed 86,000 views in its first ten hours.

Neal describes how hard university and her first job were before anyone put a name to it. "At my first job, I found it really hard with time management, getting up in the morning," she says. Near the end of the report she adds a line that sums up much of what follows: "People that are seeking a diagnosis are already at their wit's end."

The review, chaired by Professor Peter Fonagy, warns of a risk of over-diagnosis and calls for tighter rules on assessments. The same report says the rise in mental health problems among young people is real and that recognition of both conditions has grown so fast that hundreds of thousands are waiting. The figures on screen put the ADHD queue alone at more than half a million. Fonagy's own argument points the other way from the alarm in the title: "Support should be before diagnosis, at a time when the problem presents." Bridget Phillipson, shown as Women and Equalities Minister, says the government will set out a new mental health strategy in the coming months.

That gap is what viewers keep returning to. The comments arrived several times faster than under a usual 5 News Short, and many of them say the title stresses over-diagnosis while the report itself asks for faster assessment and earlier help. Others share their own waits, for themselves or their children, and ask whether rising numbers simply reflect people who were missed for years.

It was not the channel's only fast-moving Short of the day: Pete Hegseth's comments on livestreaming an execution also drew far more viewers than usual, though the ADHD report reached them faster.
