Wetherspoons covered in poppies after veteran ‘denied entry over poppy’

The footage, shared by 5 News, shows a demonstration following a controversy over a veteran being refused entry while wearing a remembrance poppy. The short clip documents the response outside the pub, rather than the original confrontation.

According to 5 News, a staff member was recorded telling the veteran that the poppy was "political" and that he would not be served while wearing it. Wetherspoons subsequently denied having a poppy ban, saying extra security measures were in place because of demonstrations in the Hampshire town.

That context matters: the confrontation happened during an anti-immigration march and a separate counter-demonstration. The later footage shows people placing poppies across the pub's exterior signage, with bystanders recording the scene.

The upload reached more than 100,000 views in fourteen hours, far beyond a usual first day for a 5 News Short. Its final street-level image is the pub's "WETHERSPOON FREE HOUSE" lettering dotted with red poppies.
