Driver in car race accident that killed mum and daughter filmed crash scene – then drove to work
Two men have been jailed after racing high-performance cars through Leeds, with one continuing to film as he passed the wreckage before driving on to work. He did not call the emergency services, 5 News reports.
The broadcaster's Short focuses on what Jasskamal Riyat did after Hardeep Bhachu lost control of his Audi TT. The car struck a curb, mounted the pavement and killed a mother and her young daughter who were walking to nursery.
According to the report, the court heard that Bhachu was traveling at almost 90 mph on a road with a 40 mph limit. Before the crash, the drivers had spoken through their windows at traffic lights about the power of their cars. Phone and dashcam recordings captured the exchange, with Riyat encouraging Bhachu.
Bhachu admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and received a 12-year prison sentence. Riyat, who was driving a BMW closely behind, denied racing but was convicted at trial. He received 16 years.
The report drew about 35,000 views in its first 14 hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for Shorts.
At Leeds Crown Court, Judge Ray Singh told the men that a public road was not a racetrack. Both also received six-year driving bans and must take extended driving tests.
