A date night turns deadly ... #shorts
Jade Benning's best friend had stopped by her apartment to pick up food while Benning was preparing a date-night dinner. About an hour after leaving, she received a call that sounded like an accidental dial. What she heard sent her rushing back.
In the 48 Hours excerpt, the friend recalls hearing Benning say she felt faint and scared, and question what had been put in her drink. By the time the friend reached the apartment, Benning was already in an ambulance.
The Short, titled "A date night turns deadly ... #shorts", drew roughly 186,000 views in 13 hours, an unusually fast start compared with the channel's usual Shorts. It introduces "Jade Benning's Final Call," a report by Natalie Morales scheduled to air October 31. The episode's preview describes the phone call as a crucial piece of evidence.
The channel also saw an unusually strong start for "The Mansion Above Dale Hollow Lake | Full Episode," Peter Van Sant's separate report on two deaths and a house associated with a local legend. That episode had aired earlier in October.
The Benning excerpt stays close to her friend's account of the evening and her determination to understand it. "My best friend called me for a reason, and I'm going to make sure like we figure out what happened," she says.
