Five languages, one wedding: Xiaoma's ceremony keeps the channel busy
With nothing new posted, a five-week-old video in which he officiates a New York wedding passed four million views.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
I Surprised Bride and Groom by Marrying Them in Their Languages
Xiaoma took the week off from posting, and an old promise did the work instead. In "I Surprised Bride and Groom by Marrying Them in Their Languages," he becomes an ordained minister licensed in New York City and marries Michelle and William, a couple who watch his videos. He conducts the ceremony in the five languages spoken across their two families, so that nobody in the room is left out. The multilingual MC Johnny Deng of Subtle Asian Entertainment shares the day with him.
Five weeks on, the wedding has passed four million views, and right now it is drawing more than twice as many views a day as anything else on the channel.
The two videos behind it could hardly be further apart. One is a February visit to Westtown School in Pennsylvania, where a quiet student answers his teacher in fluent Latin. That student is ScorpioMartianus, who runs his own channel about Latin and ancient Greek. The other is the long Hong Kong trip with Wareka, a Waorani guide from the Ecuadorian Amazon. The description says Xiaoma spent a year on a U.S. visa application for him that was refused, then picked a city that doesn't ask Ecuadoreans for one. McDonald's, Victoria Peak and Disneyland's jungle cruise follow, which may be the funniest ride to take a man from the actual jungle on.
Among the explainer and education channels around him, Tom Scott is the one having the big week, running at several times his usual pace. Xiaoma, fourth by subscribers in that group at about 7.1 million, is resting on a back catalog that still speaks in many languages.
