Elon Musk wants both halves of Starship back on Flight 15
VideoFromSpace's Short animates the upper stage settling into the tower's "chopsticks," the half of the plan that would be new.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 303,317 views a day, 36 times a normal first day on this channel (8,531).
SpaceX to Catch Starship on Flight 15?! 🚀 #SpaceX #Starship #Flight15 #space #shorts
VideoFromSpace has turned Elon Musk's latest Starship promise into a 40-second preview. "For flight 15, which we expect to happen next month, we're going to attempt to catch both the booster and the ship," Musk says at the start, seated at a table.
The tower's mechanical arms have caught Super Heavy boosters before. The ship is the new part, and the animation spends most of its time there: Starship comes down through the sky, slides between the arms fans call "chopsticks," and ends up held against the tower with the moon behind it. It is computer animation, not footage of a recovery that has happened.
Musk calls it "a massive technology milestone." If it works, he says, it will be the first time an orbital launch vehicle has been fully recovered. He ties the goal to something bigger than the rocket: "The only way that we can extend consciousness beyond Earth on a sustained basis is with a fully reusable orbital launch vehicle."
The Short, credited to SpaceX footage, drew roughly 300,000 views in its first day, about as many as the channel's longer version of the same announcement has gathered since the day before. The comments arrived more than fifty times faster than on a usual Short. Many write about the size of the attempt and the feeling of watching history. Messages of luck come from India and Italy. One viewer stops on Musk's choice of the word "consciousness" rather than "the human race."
The channel built its name in 2013 with astronauts showing how to wash hands and cook spinach aboard the space station. Its busiest Shorts lately come from Starship and Artemis 2.
