A 17-month high in the trade deficit, and John Iadarola's Canada tariff argument
Comments arrived about four times faster than on a usual first day, many from Canadians listing what crosses the border.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 309,766 views a day, 6 times a normal first day on this channel (51,892).
Trump’s Canada Tariffs BACKFIRE With Record Trade Deficit
Eight hours after it went up, "Trump's Canada Tariffs BACKFIRE With Record Trade Deficit" had passed 150,000 views. That puts it on pace for about six times what a regular Damage Report video collects on its first day.
The argument is simple, and John Iadarola builds it on the administration's own promise. Tariffs were supposed to shrink the gap between what the United States buys abroad and what it sells, and he sets that promise against the latest government trade figures. The description cites Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis data showing the deficit rose 13.7 percent in a single month to reach a 17-month high in August, its highest level since March 2025. The title calls it a record. The figures it relies on describe the biggest gap in well over a year.
The comment section moved even faster than the views. In eight hours it had roughly four times the comments a regular upload usually gathers in a whole first day. Many of the writers say they are Canadian, and they list what flows south: oil, potash for American farmers' fertilizer, electricity, uranium. Others explain the economics as household jokes, asking whether they run a trade deficit with their grocery store or with Costco. A few point out that the picture changes once services are counted alongside goods.
The video follows the channel's piece on the closing of a Milwaukee steel foundry, which also blamed tariffs, as we reported here. The other uploads from the same day, including one on Senator Roger Marshall's tightening race in Kansas, stayed far smaller. Across the whole channel it was a quieter day than usual, which makes this one video stand out even more.
