A robot voice, a pulled-off mask and a printed microphone: Vita Kari at TEDxUofW
The Los Angeles artist runs from Duchamp's urinal to lonelygirl15 in fifteen minutes, and the comment section is still arguing over whether it was a machine on stage.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 63,679 views a day, 150 times a normal first day on this channel (426).
Does social media kill creativity? | Vita Kari | TEDxUofW
Vita Kari walks onto the TEDxUofW stage in a white bodysuit and balaclava and starts talking like a machine. Seconds later the mask comes off. "You were expecting a robot? But I am fully human," Kari says, "because that's what my art is all about: subverting reality."
That trick is most of the conversation underneath. Viewers describe flipping between robot, human pretending to be a robot and robot again in the space of a few seconds, and one points at the 39-second mark as the moment that caught them. Another commenter says they supplied the robot vocal. Within 11 hours the comments had come in more than twenty times faster than a usual first day for the channel's talks, on a shelf where most new uploads open with a few hundred views.
The rest of the talk is an argument, fast and illustrated: "We're living through an invention of a new medium for fine art, and it's called virality." Kari, a deaf and hard of hearing artist who weaves tapestries inspired by a grandmother's rugs, traces that medium through video art pioneers Nam June Paik and Pipilotti Rist, the early web series lonelygirl15, a lolcat asking "I CAN HAS?", Marcel Duchamp's readymade Fountain and Amalia Ulman's 2014 Instagram performance, the one that fooled many followers into taking a staged life as real.
There is also Sophia the Robot, held up as a muse who sits somewhere between machine and meme. And the ending is a second gag: a cardboard microphone snaps, and Kari admits, "This isn't my microphone, I just printed it out!" The parting advice is just as small and just as deliberate: "Be a little cringe-curious."
