Who gets to be pro-Black? Sunn m'Cheaux runs down the list of conditions

The Gullah educator's newest lesson piles up disqualifications until nobody is left, and his commenters keep adding their own.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

You Can't Be Pro-Black and...You Can't Be Pro-Black and...

Who, exactly, is allowed to call themselves pro-Black? Sunn m'Cheaux's "You Can't Be Pro-Black and..." takes the question literally, stacking up the conditions people attach to the label until the list empties the room. The point, as one of the most liked comments puts it in its own way, is that when every intersecting identity disqualifies someone, no one is left standing.

It is a video that asks for patience, and the comment section knows it. Several viewers joke about the people who clicked away in the first minute, before the turn, and many more have taken up the format, writing their own absurd entries for the list, from a cat that meets every requirement to a riff in the rhythm of a Dr. Seuss book.

The rest of the week ran on the same engine. m'Cheaux, a Gullah language teacher and sociolinguist, posted four lessons in all, most of them built as a pair of ideas set against each other: brutal honesty against radical truth, rage bait against deadpan satire. The newest, a deliberately provocative title about pets, is the one moving fastest right now, while a nine-day-old defense of Shabba Ranks against colorist mockery has passed half a million views.

Altogether the channel drew close to 800,000 views over the week, running well above its usual pace, with about 3,000 new subscribers. Among the education channels nearest its size, that puts it in the middle of the group, while English with Steve Ford and Geo All Day are having the biggest weeks.

  • The smile and laugh and cackle as I watched this because I know what's going on and then the silence at the end as I considered how to get my grandma to understand what you just said. Profound and incredible.
