Video taking off 32x its usual first day

Rod Laver's cup, three generations, and a Stan Sport clip that flew

A Laver Cup short billed as the past, present and future of men's tennis on one court drew about thirty times a usual first day for the Australian sports channel.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 35,976 views a day, 32 times a normal first day on this channel (1,130).

Two Laver Cup clips carried it. Stan Sport, the Australian streaming service built around football, rugby and Grand Slam tennis, usually sees a new upload gather around a thousand views on its first day. The short titled "The past, present AND future of men's tennis on one court" passed 35,000 in under a day, roughly thirty times that.

The title keeps its three names to itself, and the comments fill in only part of the picture. Carlos Alcaraz is the player most of them mention, mainly for his manners, and more than one viewer credits his parents for them. Another remarks that Rod Laver looks as though he could still play.

The second clip was close behind: Alexander Zverev "NOT ACCEPTING Carlos Alcaraz's exhaustion," a lighter moment from the same event that sat only slightly behind in views. Next to them, the channel's WTA posts from the China Open in Beijing, including one billed as the new world number one, Elena Rybakina, arriving on court, stayed in the low thousands. So did Kimberly Birrell's first WTA title in Seoul, a story the channel marked with an Australian flag.

Laver is the obvious "past" at an event that carries his name. The Australian won all four majors in a single calendar year twice, in 1962 and 1969, and no other player has done it more than once. The Laver Cup, which sets a team from Europe against one from the rest of the world, has been named in his honor since its first edition. For a channel whose home crowd knows Melbourne's center court by his name, this clip brought a local legend into the picture, and it reached far more people than Stan Sport's uploads usually do.
