Eight pages are missing from Jeffy's copy of The Cat in the Hat, and someone has left map coordinates inside the cover, signed "SMAN." That is how "SML Movie: Jeffy Meets Slenderman!" begins, and in its first day it drew roughly 1.5 million views.
The copy is not exactly Jeffy's. He took it from the library, which prompts his dad's appalled "You stole from the library?" before the librarian turns up at the door. She explains that Slenderman tears eight pages out of library books and hides them in the woods, and then she names her price: the pages, or a $20 fine.
The forest hunt that follows is a puppet-sized version of Slender: The Eight Pages, the 2012 horror game in which players collect scattered notes while a faceless figure closes in. Here the trio tries to look at him just long enough to keep him frozen. A masked actor in a suit plays the monster, and Jeffy, typically, is the one character who is not scared of him.
The real twist arrives later, on the family's doorstep, because Jeffy gave the creature their address. "I can't read," Slenderman admits, so they sit him on the couch with One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. It is the gentlest scene of the sketch, at least for a while.
The video lands in the middle of an October run of horror parodies on the channel, after takes on Scream 3 and I Know What You Did Last Summer. In the comments, viewers are pointing out Brooklyn Guy's new librarian outfit and noticing that staring at this Slenderman brings none of the game's familiar static.
