Why Gen Z can’t go to court
"Like rent. Do I have to pay rent in prison?" Rudy Ayoub's defendant has questions, but appealing his conviction isn't the priority.
In the comedy sketch "Why Gen Z can't go to court", Ayoub plays all three sides of a courtroom exchange: a robed judge, a suited defense attorney and a defendant in an orange jumpsuit. The sentence is life in prison. Once the defendant learns that food, housing and medical care are included, he starts treating it like an all-inclusive vacation.
The Short has drawn roughly 550,000 views in 15 hours, already far beyond the channel's usual first-day Shorts audience. Its comment section is more than three times as busy as a typical full first day.
For a channel whose popular sketches include "When arab dads get a ransom call", this is another authority figure discovering that his words aren't having the intended effect. The judge finally tries a different punishment: freedom. Returning to bills and ordinary life sends the defendant into a panic.
Viewers are picking up on that reversal, making jokes about debt replacing a prison sentence. Others question the title's generational boundary: the anxiety about paying for everyday life, they point out, isn't exclusive to Gen Z.
