Pixar opens Coco's storyboards and lets Soul's sound breathe

Miguel's entrance to Ernesto de la Cruz's mansion gets a storyboard-to-film comparison, while Soul loses its music and dialogue.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

A mansion entrance and the sounds of everyday life give Pixar's latest uploads two very different ways into the filmmaking process. One shows how a scene takes shape; the other asks what remains when the voices and score fall away.

In "Coco Side by Side | \"Ernesto de la Cruz\" Scene | Storyboards vs. Film", Miguel's arrival at Ernesto's mansion appears in both storyboard and finished-animation form. It is already the channel's busiest video by daily views, despite arriving near the end of the week.

"Pixar's SOUL: ASMR" takes the opposite approach to a conventional movie clip: no music, no dialogue, just sound work from Pixar and Skywalker Sound accompanying Joe. For a film whose central character is a jazz pianist, taking the music out is a particularly interesting invitation to listen.

Pixar posted five videos altogether. The most watched new upload, "might have to take the L on that one...", revisits Randall from Monsters, Inc. and has reached about 28,000 views. The comments wander beyond his bruised pride: viewers recall his earlier characterization in Monsters University, talk about revisiting the original film and note its approaching twenty-fifth anniversary. Autumn coziness and a look at Rex's workday phone round out the lineup.

The subscriber total held steady, while daily viewing is currently well below its usual pace. Walt Disney Animation Studios drew a similar weekly audience; Universal Pictures had a considerably busier week.

There is also life beyond the fresh clips. "Pixar Artist Short Film: Fruit & Nut (Full Short Film)", directed by Rej Bourdages and Tony Maki, is approaching 800,000 views and remains one of Pixar's strongest daily draws two weeks after release.
